MESSAGE FROM OUSD BOARD OF EDUCATION VICE PRESIDENT JUMOKE HINTON HODGE:

"Circles", a movie about restorative practices, follows one of the leading and most authentic restorative justice practitioners in Oakland and the nation. Eric Butler, a Hurricane Katrina survivor and pioneer in the restorative justice movement in Oakland Unified School District, shares his story and work at Ralph Bunche High School in West Oakland.

We will witness his no-nonsense approach to counseling vulnerable Black and Latino teenagers. The film follows Butler’s impassioned efforts to nurture troubled youth and keep them in school, fighting racial discrimination by replacing snap suspensions and expulsions with gritty, intimate and honest mentoring.

We are so fortunate to have storytellers like Cassidy Friedman, Director and Producer of "Circles", who tells the story of his practice and most compelling a look into the beautiful and intimate relationship of a Black father and his son.

“Circles” will challenge us to think about structural barriers and institutional change needed to nurture healthy restorative environments in our schools and community. “Circles” leaves us with a new set of eyes on how we restore justice in our schools and community.

This Screening is in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr

This Screening is also in Remembrance of  Ramone...Rest in Peace!
